As we're all aware, our beloved OS 9 lacks any real form of memory protection. As such, when one program crashes, there's a chance -- a nearly 100% chance, it seems -- that it will take the entire system down with it when it goes. Here are some tips to help minimize data loss when the inevitable occurs:
Run only one program at a time. Really. Why push fate with three or four programs running at once? Just run the one program you need at that moment, quit it, then switch to the next.
Hard wire your left hand to Command-S. Save early, save often, then save again.
In the Finder, duplicate your working folders with great regularity -- remember to quit your other program first, just in case. Then duplicate the folder in the Finder, relaunch your application, and go back to work.
By following these few simple tips, you can minimize the pain of those total machine lockups.
