Several readers were asking why Apple removed the option of using wireless network drive to work with time machine, as it was still activated in the last built sent to developers before being declared "Gold". It could have been a nice option for an Airport Station 802.11n plugged to an USB external HD. Roughlydrafted reports that for security reason, Apple might have chosen not to let this option activated. Indeed, when receiving data to be saved, the wireless station sends confirmation message to the computer. So, if writing data fails, Time machine will ignore it. Apple will need to work on the Airport 802.11n firmware before being able to activate this feature. The solution might be part of the future Mac OS X 10.5.1 update. If you wish to use Time Machine with an external HD connected to Airport station, you simply need to enter the following command line: defaults write com.apple.systempreferences TMShowUnsupportedNetworkVolumes 1 However, remember that it will not imply that backups would have been perform properly.
