MDD owner notes on RocketRaid 1742/SATA Drive Random Performance Drops |

A MDD owner with newly added Highpoint RocketRaid 1742 card driving 2 internal Samsung SP2004C drives said although he has good benchmark performance (around 100MB/sec. read and write rates), the transfer rate will drop randomly to around 6MB/sec and saying the disks will start sounding like boiling water. I asked if he leaves Activity Monitor open if it shows anything during those times. Almost reminds me of Thermal Recalibration but I didn't think that was an issue for modern drives. He said spotlight was disabled on the drives. Last week there was another G4 tower/Rocketraid 1742 card owner that mentioned very poor performance with his external Seagate 750GB drives. A later reply from another RR card owner (different model) asked if they had changed the cache mode setting from the default write-back to write-through. Klaus' comment on around 100MB/sec read/write benchmark scores make me think he didn't but I wrote to confirm that.
