Supports Windows 7, Vista, or XP running via Boot Camp, Parallels Desktop, or VMware FusionThe perils of malware and viruses are everywhere, and Mac users shouldn't be complacent, especially if they're also running Windows via Boot Camp or other virtualisation software. To those ends, Intego has released VirusBarrier X6 Dual Protection, which offers all the features of its X6 product for both Mac and Windows operating systems running on your machine. VirusBarrier X6 DP aims to be a comprehensive solution, defending you from viruses, malware, phishing, and spyware. You also get a two-way firewall (which keeps the baddies out, and your sensitive information in). On the Mac side, you're protected by VirusBarrier X6, and on the Windows side, there's Intego's BitDefender 2010. VirusBarrier X6 Dual Protection is available now. You'll need an Intel Mac running OS X 10.5 or 10.6 and the software supports Windows 7, Vista, or XP running via Boot Camp, Parallels Desktop, or VMware Fusion. As we reported recently, pricing was a little complicated with Intego's X6 package, and that's true for Dual Protection as well. The £47.78/$60 standard license for X6 DP covers two Macs and one Windows installation. Bear in mind, however, that this price gives you a twelve-month subscription to the virus updates; after that, you'll have to renew. Intego had not provided pricing information for renewal as of press time. Meanwhile, the £77.68/$85 family pack will protect five Macs (but still only one Windows installation). A full upgrade from X5 DP to X6 DP - which includes the latest and greatest BitDefender 2010 for Windows - is £34.95/$55 for the standard license and £59.95/$80 for the family pack.

Webster theorises the later stages of the game - four lines and up - will help stimulate the parts of the brainNew York based Kyle T. Webster has illustrated for most major publications in the US, with a client list to die for including The New Yorker, NY Times, Entertainment Weekly, BusinessWeek, Time Magazine and Nike. Webster has now turned his creative hand to creating his first iPhone application with 'White Lines' a 59p a simple but tricky memory game. "iPhone apps are the perfect place for creative people to try out something new and release it to a huge audience, without the usual expense involved in such an endeavour," Webster told Macworld. The game, riding high in the US and UK iTunes charts, has already been updated with added OpenFeint support for leader boards, achievements and more.'White Lines,' is designed for all ages, and asks players to redraw lines that travel across the screen in the same order and direction in which they originally appeared. Webster designed the game in black and white with sparse graphical elements an effort to make the game stand out from the arcade-style games that are currently on a busy iTunes Store for games. Webster theorises the later stages of the game - four lines and up - will help stimulate the parts of the brain that are used for short term recall because the core game model makes use of the four basic elements required for such stimulation - concentration, repetition, pattern building, and information absorption. Available from the Apple iTunes App Store, White Lines costs 59p and requires the iPhone 3.0 Software Update. You can read a full Macworld interview with here.

A number of companies plan to ride Apple's coattails with tablet devices of their ownThe launch of Apple's iPad will pave the way for a slew of rival products this year, an Arm executive said Wednesday, predicting over 50 tablet PC devices will be launched globally. The coming swarm of tablets has even prompted Arm, Intel's main rival in the mobile microprocessor business, to rent more space at the Computex electronics trade show in Taipei this year to show off the devices, in addition to e-readers, mini-laptops and other devices that use Arm processing cores. "The first tablet devices will launch in the second quarter by [mobile network] carriers," said Roy Chen, Arm's worldwide mobile computing ODM manager, during a press meeting in Taipei. "You'll see a lot more in the third quarter," he added. He said many tablet-like devices will be launched in China, but companies everywhere plan to launch tablets this year, including the top 10 telecommunications network operators. He declined to name specific companies. Like many chip makers, Arm often gains an inside view of products its chips are being used in, sometimes when asked for additional engineering support and other times due to partnership programs. The company showed off two tablet devices at the Taipei news conference, both running Google's Android mobile OS.

Jonathan Schwartz is starting to share stories about his days at Sun, possibly in preparation for a bookDon't expect Jonathan Schwartz, former CEO of Sun Microsystems, to go quietly. Instead he has taken to his personal blog, provocatively titled "What I couldn't say...," to dish some industry dirt and tell his side of the story about the demise of Sun. He has already hinted at plans to write a book, and a new post Tuesday suggests a tell-all tome could indeed be in the offing. "I feel for Google -- Steve Jobs threatened to sue me, too," Schwartz writes, apparently referring to Apple's patent lawsuit against HTC, which makes Google's Nexus One smartphone. Schwartz says he had just unveiled Sun's Linux desktop, Project Looking Glass, in 2003, when Jobs called him to assert that Sun's graphics were "stepping all over" Apple's intellectual property. If Sun tried to commercialize the technology, Schwartz says, Jobs told him, "I'll just sue you." As Schwartz tells it, he responded by reminding Jobs about Sun's considerable arsenal of OS-related patents. "Steve was silent," Schwartz writes. A later meeting with Bill Gates and Steve Ballmer ended on a similar note, according to Schwartz. The Microsoft duo, then its CEO and president, had flown to Silicon Valley to meet with Sun's executive team. "As we sat down in our Menlo Park conference room, Bill skipped the small talk and went straight to the point, 'Microsoft owns the office productivity market, and our patents read all over OpenOffice,'" Schwartz writes. OpenOffice is the open-source productivity suite that Sun backed heavily as an alternative to Microsoft Office. "Bill was delivering a slightly more sophisticated variant of the threat Steve had made, but he had a different solution in mind," Schwartz writes. Gates offered Sun a patent license. "That was code for 'We'll go away if you pay us a royalty for every download' -- the digital version of a protection racket."

Left 4 Dead 2, Team Fortress 2,Counter-Strike, Portal, and the Half Life seriesWell, that was quick. After gamers found "evidence" that Valve may bring some of its wildly successful gaming products to the Mac, and Valve teased as much last week, we now have official confirmation. Valve is coming to the Mac in a big way.In a press release Monday, Valve announced that Steam, its "Source" gaming engine, and a number of its most popular titles will be available on the Mac in April. Selections from Valve's library that will be available at launch include Left 4 Dead 2, Team Fortress 2,Counter-Strike, Portal, and the Half Life series.Valve also announced that game licenses can transgress platforms, so any game that you purchased for the PC will also work once it comes to the Mac, with no additional fee.Valve will bring Steam, its wildly popular Windows game marketplace, to the Mac as well, and it sounds like third-party publishers are on board:"Our Steam partners, who are delivering over a thousand games to 25 million Steam clients, are very excited about adding support for the Mac," said Jason Holtman, Director of Business Development at Valve. "Steamworks for the Mac supports all of the Steamworks APIs, and we have added a new feature, called Steam Play, which allows customers who purchase the product for the Mac or Windows to play on the other platform free of charge. For example, Steam Play, in combination with the Steam Cloud, allows a gamer playing on their work PC to go home and pick up playing the same game at the same point on their home Mac. We expect most developers and publishers to take advantage of Steam Play."This should be great news for Mac gamers who have become accustomed to using Boot Camp or building an entirely separate Windows PC. Valve notes that they specifically wanted to go with native development solutions, and not just emulation, which rarely yields a great experience. The company also confirmed that its upcoming Portal 2 sequel will be its first official simultaneous release for Mac OS X and Windows.

11 major organisations in the UK have their IT strategy led by women.Gordon Brown, to get some coverage on International Women's Day, says the lack of women on the boards of companies is "unacceptable". Considering his cabinet is a bit thin on the influence of women, this could be seen as a bit ironic. Although the men dominate the CIO world, there are a number of very impressive women heading up the IT operations in the UK. There are 11 major UK organisations whose IT strategy is led by women, click on the hyperlinks to learn more about them. The leading women CIOs are: Tania Howarth, CIO and HR director for food maker Birds Eye led an impressive split from Unilever to create a Greenfield IT site and strategy. Tiffany Hall has recently become the CIO of national cultural organisation the BBC and helping the broadcaster adapt to how technology is changing the face of the media. Christine Connelly has probably the hardest brief a CIO can have, leading the modernisation of IT in the NHS as CIO of the Department of Health. Anne Moises is CIO of one of the youngest government IT positions, heading up technology for the new and very modern Scottish Government. Just along the M8 at Glasgow City Council the IT strategy is led by Cathleen Nelson. Elsewhere in the public sector Ailsa Beaton heads IT for Britain's largest police force the Metropolitan Police at Scotland Yard and Catherine Doran is very well respected as head of IT at Network Rail and Caroline Smith is navigating technology issues such as subsidy payment problems at Defra, the department responsible for keeping British agriculture feeding the nation. In financial services Veronique Arnoldi is pulling together IT at Aviva Investors, part of the Aviva insurance and pensions empire and Yasmine Jetha is putting her impressive record into IT improvements for insurance and private healthcare provider Bupa. In the utilities sector Theresa Hayes leads IT at one of the largest energy providers RWE Npower. Technology companies are not to be outdone either with Adobe and Avaya having their own IT operations governed by women.

The free London event on Tuesday 9th March starts at 5pm.Famed British film director Paul Greengrass (The Bourne Supremacy, The Bourne Ultimatum and United 93) will be appearing at the flagship Apple Store, Regent Street tomorrow night to talk about his latest film.Greengrass discusses his new thriller Green Zone starring Matt Damon, which opens at selected cinemas on Wednesday and across the UK on Friday. Green Zone is set in the chaotic early days of the Iraq War and tells the story of Chief Warrant Officer Roy Miller (Damon), a rogue U.S. Army officer who must hunt through covert and faulty intelligence hidden on foreign soil before war escalates in an unstable region."I don't really start with a story; I start with the area I want to be in," Greengrass recently told The Guardian, explaining the movie's genesis. "It was summer 2004, and I was thinking about 9/11 on the one hand and the war in Iraq, which was less than a year old, on the other. Those twin events are what are driving our politics and our culture, and that was the headwind that was making the Bourne films lift. So I wanted to make a film about the real world that was begetting those Bourne feelings, a film that basically asks that audience to step behind that curtain."The free event on Tuesday 9th March starts at 5pm. The event will also be recorded and made available to download as a podcast from the iTunes Store. The Apple Store is located at 235 Regent Street, London, W1B 2EL, 020 7153 9000.
